Legends Gala

Béjart, Neumeier and Kylián vibrate your soul.

Three gems by three legendary choreographers allows us to deeply perceive life, death, love and universe in three different ways.

Set to Stravinsky’s explosive score, Maurice Béjart’s Le Sacre du Printemps celebrates the primal power of life. The Tokyo Ballet performed it on its Italian tour to huge acclaim in 2024 and revives it in Japan for the first time in seven years.

As if symmetrically, set to slow movements from the most famous piano concertos by Mozart, Jiří Kylián’s Petite Mort is a poetical and sensuous describtion of love, life, and death which accompanies our lives “from the dawn of our existence till the end”.

Seven Haiku of the Moon was created by John Neumeier for The Tokyo Ballet in 1989. Although inspired by seven Haiku (a short poem consisting of words with a total of seventeen syllables) related to the Moon by five great Haiku poets, Matsuo Basho, Yosa Buson, Kobayashi Issa, Matsuoka Shiki and Yamaguchi Sodo, he established images independent of the poems. Set to the music of Arvo Pärt and Johann Sebastian Bach, the ballet is an exploration of a new dialogue between text and movements. The Tokyo Ballet revives it for the first time in 17 years, for which the choreographer visits the Company in Tokyo to finalize the casting and to give the finishing touch.
